Shellie Pfohl Makes Announcement About Updates to President's ...

When we held our inaugural Nutrition + Physical Activity Learning Connection Summit this past September in Washington, DC, the GENYOUth team and our partners had several important goals, which included bringing the science behind the Learning Connection (the powerful connection learning and physical activity have to a student?s performance) to the forefront, and highlighting some of the important work Summit participants are doing to support student health.
?
When Shellie Pfohl, Executive Director of the President?s Council on Fitness and Nutrition, introduced Sam Kass, Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives at the White House, she also shared some exciting news coming directly out of the White House and Let?s Move! that has the potential to reframe the way a children?s health is viewed while they are in school and through their development long-term.
?
For the first time in 25 years, the President?s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) will make major changes to the Youth Fitness test that change the priority of the test from measuring students? overall performance to measuring their ambitions and self-perceived abilities. The First Lady herself said that the test will be ?based on what they (kids) can do and what their own goal is.? She added that ?this is important because we want physical activity to be a lifelong habit.?
?
The three main components of the new program will be 1. Assessment, 2. Professional Development, and 3. Recognition and awards, replacing the Youth Fitness test with Fitnessgram, a more robust program that provides kids and families with tools and information to create and sustain healthy habits.
?
Fitnessgram? assesses cardiovascular fitness, body composition, muscle strength, muscular endurance, and flexibility. Fitnessgram? is currently used in 67,000 schools in all 50 states.
?
The GENYOUth team is thrilled to be collaborating with programs like the President?s Council Youth Fitness Program as they continuously seek out ways to empower kids and their families to take an active role in personal health. By allowing a child to set personal health goals, rather than holding to a standard that may not be realistic, they are putting trust in the student to make smart decisions and pay their learning forward to their peers. A big thank you to Shellie Pfohl and the President?s Council for making this announcement at the Learning Connection Summit, and for the substantial efforts that they are making to nurture child health.
