Porsche Design theme ported to BlackBerry 9900 / 9930, saves you a small fortune

If you want some of that Porsche Design look, without the German engineered price, then check what just pulled up on the driveway: a port of the custom theme and icons. Sadly, only BlackBerry 9900 / 9300 owners -- which share much of the same hardware as the P'9981 -- running BlackBerry OS7 (not 7.1) can give their handset that new car smell. This means the sharp lines and luxurious brushed finish that made the P'9981 catch our eye in the first place will remain firmly in those pockets deep enough to afford it. Tap the source link if you still want to add the racing stripes to your current saloon.

Verizon offers vague statement, no apology for LTE downtime

Earlier this week, you may have noticed that your Verizon Wireless LTE smartphone couldn't do inconsequential things like update your inbox, or pull up a webpage. This happened once. Then twice. And finally a third time this month. And what's the root cause? "Growing pains," according to the carrier's latest statement. And since growing pains are a natural consequence of adolescence, there's no reason for Verizon to issue any kind of apology to its paying customers, who naturally expect such inconsistencies from "the most advanced 4GLTE wireless network in the world." Now, some of you also reported issues connecting to the 3G network, which Verizon reps claim didn't experience any downtime. Instead, your hiccups were a result of being "unable to connect to the 3G Network as quickly as [Verizon] would have liked." Have any questions? Of course you don't. Such can be expected from any carrier, just like the requirement to fork over two bucks for the convenience of paying your monthly bill.

Samsung to acquire Sony's shares in S-LCD, enter a new strategic alliance

After a 7-year partnership with S-LCD, Samsung have acquired all of Sony's shares in the joint-venture for close to $939 million. S-LCD will now become a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung. Up until now, Sony owned 50-percent of S-LCD.

?

?

On top of this, both companies have entered into a new strategic agreement for the supply and purchase of LCD panels, with the end goal of increasing the competitiveness of both Sony and Samsung. The agreement also allows Sony and Samsung to continue cooperative engineering efforts focused on LCD panel technology.

?

The deal allows Sony to monetize its shares in S-LCD, giving them a nice injection of nearly $1 billion in cash, as well as the new strategic agreement. With the LCD panel and TV market conditions having changed, in order to continue to strengthen their respective market competitiveness, Sony and Samsung have agreed to shift to a new LCD panel business alliance.

?

What does this mean for us customers? Well, the next few years should show a change in Sony and Samsung, but what change? We'll have to wait and see.

JXD S7100 Android Gaming Tablet/Handset Boasts Galaxy S II ...

We?ve seen quite a few Android gaming handsets make their way out of China and while the JXD S7100 doesn?t look much different, it?s what this handset has on the inside that really caught our eye. Boasting specs more along the lines of a Galaxy S II device, the JXD offers almost the same processor with a dual-core Cortex A-9 processor and Mali 400 graphics core powering the device. This makes the JXD more than capable of most graphics intensive Android titles as long as they don?t require anything over Android 2.2, which the device comes shipped with. Also found inside the device is 512MB of RAM, 2MP rear/.3MP front facing cameras, 16GB of internal storage and HDMI out. A huge 7-inch touchscreen display can be found on front with a resolution of 800?480.

The JXD S7100 laughably advertises ?Apple games? and most will find greater use with the available emulator apps for Android than its own custom app center. I?d say the most appeal is in its $140 price-tag making this an almost instant buy should you come across this at your local swap meet. If you want to see the JXD in action, check out the video below ? oh, and you?re going to want to turn your speakers up.

Turkey, Azerbaijan sign pipeline deal

(AP) ? Turkey and Azerbaijan on Monday signed an agreement to establish a consortium that would build a pipeline to transport 16 billion cubic meters (565 billion cubic feet) per year of Azeri gas to Turkey and Europe.

The two countries' energy ministers signed a memorandum of understanding for a consortium between Azerbaijan's state energy company SOCAR, Turkey's state-run pipeline company BOTAS, and the Turkish petroleum company TPAO. The deal allows other oil and gas companies to join the consortium.

The projected pipeline, the Trans Anadolu, would carry gas from Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz II field, across Turkey.

The deal comes at a time when officials are dithering over plans for the construction of the European Union-backed Nabucco pipeline project aimed at reducing the bloc's deliveries from Russia. The project is slated to ship gas from the Caspian region through southern Europe to Austria, but its viability has been called into question amid doubts that enough suppliers can be found to fill the pipeline.

Turkey's Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said the Trans Anadolu could eventually be connected to Nabucco.

Azerbaijan's Industry and Energy Minister Natiq Aliev said the Trans Anadolu pipeline would initially carry 16 billion cubic meters (565 billion cubic feet) per year of gas but the capacity could, in time, increase to 24 billion cubic meters (847 billion cubic feet) per year.

Six billion cubic meters (212 billion cubic feet) of the gas would be sold to Turkey while some 10 billion cubic meters (353 billion cubic feet) would go to European markets, Aliev said.

SOCAR has an 80 percent stake in the Trans Anadolu consortium, while the Turkish companies share 20 percent, Yildiz said.

Officials said construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 and end in 2017.

The pipeline's route and cost would be announced after a feasibility study by SOCAR, Yildiz told reporters.

New York Military Forces Honor Guard performs record number of funerals in 2011

LATHAM, N.Y. - The New York Military Forces Honor Guard performed more military funeral honors in 2011- over 10,500 - than at any time since it was created in 1999.

Last year the Honor Guard provided honors at the funerals of 10,415 soldiers, service members and veterans. As of Dec. 23, Honor Guard members had participated in funerals for 10,564 veterans, said Don E. Roy, the director of the program since 2003.

He anticipates providing military honors at more than 10,600 funerals across New York by New Year's Day, 2012, Roy added.

The bulk of these funerals, more than 90 percent, were for veterans of the Second World War, Roy said.

The 60 New York Army soldiers who work full-time with the Honor Guard and the 70, who participate in funerals on a part-time basis work out of nine offices located across the state from Long Island to Buffalo.

On average, the New York Honor Guard, which took first place in the most recent nationwide National Guard Honor Guard competition in 2010, conducts 900 funerals each month.

So far in 2011, the breakdown for each regional office is:

- New York, 1,638;
- Long Island, 3,677;
- Hudson Valley (Newburgh), 853;
- Capital Region, 821;
- Binghamton, 455:
- Buffalo, 1267;
- Rochester, 652;
- Syracuse, 781;
- Finger Lakes (Bath), 420.

The number of funerals conducted on Long Island is large because of the presence of two national veterans cemeteries there, Roy explained.

While the bulk of funerals have been for World War II veterans, the Honor Guard is now participating in the funerals of more and more Korean War veterans and Vietnam War veterans, Roy said.

The Honor Guard has participated in the funerals of the 32 New York Army National Guard soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001, although there were no funerals for New York National Guard soldiers in 2011.

However, the Honor Guard did participate in 10 repatriated remains ceremonies in 2011, Roy said. These were cases in which remains from past wars were finally identified and laid to rest.

The reason for the increase in funerals, aside from deaths in an aging population, is that more people are becoming aware that their loved one may be entitled to military honors at their funeral, Roy said.

Any veteran, with an honorable discharge, whether they served during peacetime or wartime, whether they retired or not, is entitled to military honors at their funeral, Roy said.

The Honor Guard has been conducting more than 10,000 funerals annually since 2007. Only California's Honor Guard performs more funerals than New York's, Roy said.

Since the program started in 1999, the New York Military Forces Honor Guard has participated in over 88,000 funerals for serving service members and veterans.

"People are starting to hear about us, and we are proud to honor those who served." Roy said.

Federal law requires that at least two Honor Guard members, from the parent service of the deceased, be present to play taps, fold and present a flag to the next of kin for all former soldiers when requested the family or a designated representative. For most of those funerals, the Honor Guard sends three members whenever possible. Soldiers killed in action, general officers, retired general officers, retired sergeants major and Medal of Honor holders require many more soldiers.

The Honor Guard's primary function is to provide military honors at the funerals of Army, Army Reserve, Army Air Corps veterans from World War II, and Army National Guard Veterans, Roy said. The Honor Guard will fill in when the other services cannot provide military honors if time permits, he said.

Honor Guard soldiers go through a week-long training program before they go out into the community to represent the Army and the Army National Guard.

It's a demanding program. The key is to focus on the drill moves required and attention to detail in uniform appearance, said Spc. Vanessa Banks, an Honor Guard member since 2010.

Banks, a Niagara Falls resident, works with the Honor Guard team based at the Masten Avenue Armory in Buffalo. Her office, one of the busiest offices in the state, does at least two funerals a day every day of the week, she said.

A cook in Company D of the 427th Support Battalion who will deploy to Kuwait in 2012, Banks said it's a real honor to represent the Army and the Army National Guard at military funerals.

"You're the last military representative of the United States Army the family gets to see," she explained. "There is a real sense of satisfaction. It makes you really proud."

In pursuit, GOP contenders rumble through Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Attacking in waves, Mitt Romney's Republican presidential rivals cast the former Massachusetts governor as a less-than-reliable conservative on taxes, gay marriage and more Tuesday in the final, intensifying phase of a costly Iowa caucus campaign.

"I think I'm going to get the nomination if we do our job right," countered Romney, sounding like the front-runner his rivals made him out to be a week before the first major test of the race.

In a measure of the political stakes, the candidates and allied groups have spent more than $12 million on television commercials to air through caucus day next Tuesday. Romney, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and supporting groups account for nearly half the total, according to one estimate.

Most of Romney's rivals preceded him into the state during the day at the end of a holiday lull, seeking support in caucuses that are likely to dispatch one or more of them to a hasty campaign exit.

"My idea of gun control? Use both hands," said Perry, setting out on a bus tour in hopes of resurrecting his once-promising candidacy.

"I've been a conservative all my life," said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. He called Romney a "Massachusetts moderate ... who campaigned to the left of Teddy Kennedy."

In Dubuque, the first stop of a bus tour through the state, Gingrich said his own economic proposal for an optional flat-tax as well as the elimination of all capital gains taxes was a more pro-growth approach than Romney's prescription.

In a radio interview, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum said Romney had "sort of gotten a pass'" when he said in a recent debate he had done all he could as Massachusetts governor to block same-sex marriages in the state.

Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota had a bus of her own, and saw herself as the rightful Romney alternative.

"I am the only consistent conservative in the race and the only candidate with the proven leadership and experience to create more American jobs and repair our economy," she wrote in an email seeking donations for her underfunded candidacy.

Bachmann, Perry and Gingrich have all spent time atop the Iowa public opinion polls in recent months, either alone or alongside Romney, only to fall back.

Recent soundings suggest Texas Rep. Ron Paul is Romney's likeliest threat in Iowa. He is due in the state on Wednesday.

A conservative with libertarian leanings, Paul commands strong allegiance from his own supporters but appears to have little potential to expand his appeal and emerge as a serious challenger for the nomination.

Unlike his rivals and most Republican voters, he says the federal government should have no authority to ban abortion.

And Paul was alone among the GOP contenders in a recent debate in saying the United States should not consider preemptive military action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, an issue of significant importance to Israel. He warned against jumping the gun, adding, "That's how we got into that useless war in Iraq."

Romney, making his second run for the nomination, has relied on a well-funded and disciplined organization, generally strong debate performances and deep-pocketed allies to keep his balance as others have risen to challenge him and fallen back.

According to one tally of television advertising in the state, the Massachusetts governor and a super PAC run by supporters have spent $3.7 million combined on ads through Jan. 3

The total was exceeded only by a combined $5.5 million for Perry and a super PAC set up by his supporters.

Whatever the outcome, there was a recognition that for some, Iowa might simultaneously be the first and last test of the campaign.

"If I finish dead last way behind the pack I'm going to pack up and go home," Santorum said in a radio interview on WHO in Des Moines. "But I don't think that's going to happen," he added instantly.

Santorum, more than any of the others, has campaigned in Iowa the old fashioned way by doggedly visiting all 99 counties and holding hundreds of town hall meetings.

In Mason City, on a final swing through the state, he, like the others, urged potential caucus-goers to look past the appeal of conservative pretenders.

"The siren song of `this person can win' has been the mantra of a lot of the candidates," he said. "Vote for me because I can win."

In the state where caucuses propelled Obama toward the White House in 2008, the president's campaign organization pointed toward Election Day next Nov. 6.

With offices in eight Iowa cities, officials said Obama's re-election campaign has placed hundreds of thousands of phone calls since April to potential supporters.

Racism Alive and Well in the U.S. Military

From the Washington Post and the Daily Beast:

The U.S. Army, which has struggled in recent years to combat a mounting suicide toll, took an unusual step when it announced Wednesday that it had charged eight American soldiers serving in Afghanistan in connection with the apparent suicide of one of their lower-ranking comrades.

The charges in the death of Pvt. Danny Chen, a 19-year-old infantryman from New York City, came after a vigorous, weeks-long campaign by advocacy groups and family members hoping to pressure the Pentagon to investigate allegations that Chen had been the subject of hazing within the ranks and had been repeatedly taunted with racial slurs.

. . . ?We were told that he was dragged from his bed across the floor, and other soldiers threw rocks at his back,? Elizabeth OuYang, president of the New York chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans, tells The Daily Beast. And, OuYang says, while forced to do chin-ups with liquid in his mouth, ?Danny couldn?t cough up the liquid.?
?
OuYoung says the anti-Asian bullying and taunting started during basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia, when fellow soldiers used a mocking accent while calling him Jackie Chen, a reference to the action star Jackie Chan. A diary that Chen kept, as well as information released by the Army, are the basis for her claims.

NFL Week 16: New York Giants (7-7) at New York Jets (8-6)

It?s the biggest game in the history of the Giants-Jets battle for New York as the loser of Saturday?s game is likely out of the playoffs and has to hear the other team brag about owning the city for the entire offseason. Plus Giants coach Tom Coughlin?s job is on the line and Jets coach Rex Ryan?s credibility is at stake.

The Jets hold the final AFC wild-card spot with Cincinnati, Tennessee, Oakland and San Diego lurking, while the Giants need to win the log-jammed NFC East to qualify for the playoffs. They?re one game back of first-place Dallas and one ahead of Philadelphia. Those teams face each other Saturday before the Giants host the Cowboys in Week 17.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez is on a career-best pace for yards and touchdown passes, but he?s completing only 56.9 percent of his passes. The Giants? defense ranks 28th in giving up 385.1 yards per game. New York has lost five of its past six games after a 6-2 start.

Though Giants QB Eli Manning is having one of his best seasons ? completing 61.6 percent of his passes for a career-high 4,362 yards ? he?s thrown 10 interceptions in his last seven games after having just five in his first seven. The Jets? defense ranks seventh against the pass, yielding 205.1 yards per game, but they?ve only come up with three interceptions the past six games after grabbing 13 in their first eight.

The Giants average 3.4 yards per attempt on the ground but have been better of late, averaging 5.2 yards per carry in the past two games. The Jets allow fewer than 4 yards per carry but have been inconsistent at times. The Giants need to pound the rock with Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw to set up their play-action passing game.

STREAKS, STATS AND NOTES ? After week of trash talk, most of it from Jets coach Rex Ryan, teams meet in showdown of New York-area rivals with plenty of playoff implications. If Giants beat Jets and then Dallas next weekend, they win NFC East and return to playoffs for first time since 2008. Two wins will likely clinch Jets a third straight wild-card appearance under Ryan. ? Three players in game have played for both Ryan and Giants coach Tom Coughlin: Jets WR Plaxico Burress and QB Mark Brunell, and Giants P Steve Weatherford. ? Giants have lost five of last six, but have won last four regular-season games against Jets. ? QB Eli Manning has thrown for franchise-record 4,362 yards, and with 25 TDs joined Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Dan Marino and Drew Brees as only QBs with at least 3,000 yards and 20 TDs in seven straight seasons. Manning, who won only other start vs. Jets, has 14 TDs in fourth quarter, tied for most in a season. Also has three 400-yard games, tied for NFL?s single-season mark. ? WR Victor Cruz has 1,194 yards receiving and needs 150 in last two games to top Amani Toomer?s team record set in 2002. ? Hakeem Nicks has 1,096 yards receiving, making him and Cruz the first pair of Giants WRs to have 1,000 yards in same season. ? DE Jason Pierre-Paul has 13? sacks, and at least a half-sack in 10 of 14 games this season. ? Jets looking to improve to 7-1 at home, which would match best mark in team history ? last set in 1998. ? Burress facing Giants for first time since they released him in 2009 after accidentally shooting himself in November 2008. Later served 20 months in prison on gun charge, and signed with Jets less than two months after release. ? QB Mark Sanchez needs 283 yards passing to top career best of 3,291 set last season. ? RB Shonn Greene needs 59 yards rushing to reach 1,000 for the first time in three-year career. Leads AFC with four TDs rushing in December. ? RB LaDainian Tomlinson has 13,599 yards rushing, 64 from passing Jerome Bettis for fifth place on c areer list. ? WR Santonio Holmes has TD catch in four straight games, and he and Burress are only duo from same team in AFC with at least eight TD receptions. ? KR-RB Joe McKnight leads NFL with 32.3 yard kickoff return average, but status was uncertain as he recovers from separated right shoulder and hyperextended right elbow.

Former Libyan rebels offered military jobs

Lifting of the UN Security Council sanctions this month on Libya's central bank and a subsidiary means that the interim leaders have access to cash that could be used to offer the fighters well-paying government jobs.

Juwali said that part of the plan was to train the rebels to take up high-ranking positions in the military.

He said it would take a month to register and allocate them to the military, police and other civilian posts, and months before they were trained to guard borders and installations, including oilfields and refineries, now held by rival militias.

"Everyone is allowed to join the special forces, the navy and others," he said. Talks were being held with a number of countries to train rebels inside and outside Libya for the military, he said.

Gaddafi ignored the military, giving control to security militias led by either his sons or confidants.

Mr Juwali said he was not concerned about occasional skirmishes among rebel factions and that he was continuously in contact with most of the rebel leaders.

"I am not worried about the revolutionaries," he told Reuters after the conference. "The revolutionaries ask me every day when can they hand in their weapons and ammunition, but I tell them to wait until we have the facilities to store them."

The latest major turf war broke out this month when armed men in the vehicles of Libya's new national army tried to take control of Tripoli's international airport from a powerful Zintan militia unit.

New sensor to detect lung cancer from exhaled breath

ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2011) ? Tecnalia, through the Interreg project Medisen, is contributing to develop biosensors capable of detecting the presence of tumour markers of lung cancer in exhaled breath. This is possible because of the changes produced within the organism of an ill person, changes reflected in the exhaled breath of the patient and which enable determining the presence of this type of marker during the initial stages of the disease.

Some illnesses such as lung and stomach cancer or liver diseases which, due to the difficulty of diagnosis, have symptoms that are often confused with routine disorders. Therefore, in most cases, the disease is only detected at an advanced stage. New methods for early detection are being investigated as an urgent need.

Patients with lung cancer, treated in the Section of Medical Oncology of the Institute of Onco-Haemathology of the Donostia Hospital (IDOH) have collaborated in this phase of the project. For that, the Ethic Committee of the Clinical Research of Euskadi (CEIC) gave the authorization to the Instituto Biodonostia for the clinical trials

Human breath, whether from a healthy or ill person, is composed of a hundreds of organic compounds: acetone, methanol, butanol, hydrocarbons, amongst others. There is not a single specific component in the exhaled breath capable of acting as a marker for the diagnosis of lung cancer. A range of biomarkers and its combination should be selected. The compounds of interest are generally to be found at 1-20 parts per billion (ppb) in healthy human breath but can be increased 10-100-fold in the breath of sick patients. In order to be able to detect these changes the development of novel materials was required.

During the first phase of the project, breath samples were collected by the hospital staff by a breath collecting device. A detailed analysis of the most representative compounds present in the breath samples has been carried out and the family or families of compounds required to act as markers for the presence of lung cancer selected. Organic compounds have been analysed using gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry analysis (GC/MS). Then, the GC/MS results of breath tests have been analysed by statistical and structural algorithms to discriminate and identify "healthy and "cancerous" patterns that really provide information for the design of the sensor.

In parallel, novel materials for the detection of the selected organic compounds have been developed by Tecnalia in order to increase the sensitivity of the devices. Participating together with Tecnalia in this project were the Instituto de Tecnolog?as Qu?micas Emergentes de La Rioja (Inter-Qu?mica) designing the sensor device and the University of Perpignan (France) testing the novel materials.

As a conclusion, the biosensors will facilitate the diagnosis of certain diseases; mainly those located in the lungs, at the initial stages of the illness, which could increase considerably the chances of survival.

A few questions about Alaska jobs, and maybe resort jobs too

? ? Tell me is there a way to make it known to AK Fishing Lodge's your intention to want a job like that, instead of waitng for it pop up?

? Is there a service or someone who has applied to these jobs and best know the proper way to do so, at creating a resume they will look at , as my?current?resume is so truck related I would have trouble getting a lodge to look at it,?

?By the way I am down 33 lbs so far with my new dedication of 90 days to getting fit and losing weight, may add 60 more days to the end , thus including March and April , here in the colds of Grand Forks , ND.

?But seriously , I am curious how best to prepare the applications to get people to at?least?call you and give you the courtesy of ?phone?interview, without being "Too Creative" , yet grabbing their attention, still...

? I do hope you all have a great Holiday Season

?remember to always designate, please

? Patrick

Gun battle, explosions erupt in northern Nigeria (Reuters)

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) ? A sustained gun battle broke out between Nigerian security forces and suspected Islamist militants in the northern city of Damaturu on Thursday, and several explosions were heard, witnesses and the local police commissioner said.

Confrontations between security forces and the violent Boko Haram sect have become increasingly frequent in the past couple of weeks, as the north's simmering conflict escalates, though the insurgency remains low level and sporadic.

Nigerian police arrested 14 suspected members of Boko Haram and seized explosives after a gun battle left four militants and three policemen dead in the city of Kano over the weekend.

Yobe state police commissioner Lawan Tanko said fighting broke out after his men raided a suspected Boko Haram hideout.

"There was exchange of gunfire between my men and members of Boko Haram this evening and several bomb blasts. We attacked them in their hideout outside the state capital city centre," he told Reuters by telephone.

"I know we killed some of them. I cannot say the number because it is night. But the situation is under control."

Damaturu was the scene of the most deadly Boko Haram assault to date, when 65 people were killed in a wave of shootings and bombings on November 5 that left churches, police stations and mosques reduced to smoldering rubble.

Describing the latest flare-up of fighting there, witness Jibo Usman, 45, a Damaturu resident, said he heard the shootings and bombings late in the evening.

"We are under siege," he said. "Bomb blasts and gun shots are raining down on us non-stop. Everybody is indoors ... We are in a terrible situation."

Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates as "Western learning is forbidden" has been blamed for scores of shootings and bombings in the north, including a spate of attacks in the past few weeks across the region.

Despite many crackdowns, Nigerian security forces have so far been unable to contain Boko Haram violence. This year the group struck in the capital Abuja twice, including a suicide car bomb attack against the U.N. headquarters that killed 26 people.

New tour offers glimpse of New Orleans movie sites

Sitting near the New Orleans streetcar line aboard a van equipped with video screens and a speaker system, tourists watch actress Vivien Leigh ride the city's vintage electric rail vehicles in a scene from the 1951 film "A Streetcar Named Desire."

In the French Quarter, passengers look on as Bruce Willis escapes attackers outside a praline shop in the 2010 film "Red." They also watch a young Kirsten Dunst bite into a woman's neck in Jackson Square in one of her early roles as a bloodthirsty child vampire in 1994's "Interview With a Vampire."

A new multimedia tour being offered in New Orleans takes passengers to locations where famous movie scenes were filmed and shows them a clip from the film on site. The tour also includes peeks at the New Orleans homes of actors Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock and John Goodman.

"It really is a different way to see the city," said Debbie Carroll, a self-proclaimed movie buff from Springfield, Mo., who took the tour earlier this month. "I love movies, so I was excited to take this tour, but I also like that I got to see parts of the city I had never seen before."

Besides the tourist-heavy French Quarter, New Orleans Movie Tours includes stops in lesser-known neighborhoods such as Treme and the Faubourg Marigny. Clips from those neighborhoods include an action-packed fight sequence with Jean-Claude Van Damme in 1993's "Hard Target" and scenes from 2004's "Ray" about the life of singer Ray Charles, which landed Jamie Foxx an Academy Award.

The HBO television series "Treme," which frequently films in both the Treme and Faubourg Marigny neighborhoods and is currently filming its third season in New Orleans, is also in the tour.

The tour is approximately two hours long, includes popcorn, and is packed with location stops and clips from roughly 30 films shot in New Orleans, among them 2008's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" starring Pitt; 1965's "The Cincinnati Kid" with Steve McQueen and Ann-Margret; 1969's "Easy Rider" with Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda, and 1958's "King Creole" starring Elvis Presley.

New Orleans Movie Tours was launched this past summer by the husband-wife team of Jonathan and Michelle Ray, movie lovers from Willington, Conn., who moved to New Orleans roughly 10 years ago.

"We fell in love with the culture, the music, the people, the food, basically everything that we didn't have in Connecticut," Jonathan Ray said.

The couple followed the growing film culture in the city, he said.

Since Louisiana film tax credits were introduced in 2002, movie production hubs have popped up in cities across the state, including Shreveport, Lafayette and Baton Rouge. But New Orleans continues to see most of the activity. This year alone, roughly 45 projects ? almost half of all those filmed in the state ? were shot in the New Orleans area.

    1. Pining for Christmas past: Why we get nostalgic

Holidays bring holiday memories, and, often a sense of nostalgia for good times long gone, perhaps even loved ones long go...

    2. Prince William ... wipes some dirt off his shoulder?
    3. Giada's sweet and edible stocking stuffers
    4. Romance scams heat up for the holidays
    5. What's the best Christmas movie?

"If there's something filming, we try to include it on the tour, so the tour can change slightly from day to day," Jonathan Ray said.

During the hot summer months, the temperature-controlled van is a comfortable alternative to the walking tours the city offers, he said.

The movie tour appears to be a growing draw for tourists and locals alike, said Jennifer Day, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau and former director of the New Orleans film office. Day said the movie tour fills a void that's existed for some time.

"When I worked at the film office, we got calls all the time from movie buffs wanting information on where movies were filmed and from visitors in the city who wanted to keep an eye out for the movie they saw filming," she said.

The tour appears to be one of only a handful like it in the U.S.

"You have to be at a site where a lot of movies have been filmed for it to work," said Doug Lumsden, owner of Monterey Movie Tours in Monterey, Calif., one of fewer than a dozen multimedia movie tours in the United States. Besides New Orleans, such tours are also offered in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, and Savannah, Ga., Lumsden said.

One of the first movie tours opened on the Hawaiian island of Kauai in 1995. That tour, Hawaii Movie Tours, includes more than a dozen stops at such locations as Wailua Falls, where the TV show "Fantasy Island" was made, and Kapaa Town, where the 1993 Steven Spielberg-directed blockbuster "Jurassic Park" was filmed.

Lumsden said his tour takes movie lovers through Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel and Pebble Beach. Among the highlights is The Lodge at Pebble Beach, where Doris Day ran through the entry in the suspense drama, "Julie."

Lumsden said the Rays visited California and took his tour before launching their own venture in New Orleans.

"They are really good," he said. "They did their homework, and they really know their stuff."

I Love This $1 Graphics App For iPad [Video]

I love Poly. This iPad app allows you to draw points on any photograph, turning it into a colorful mosaic of polygons. The effect is really pretty. Sadly, it's optimized for iPad 2 and runs slow on the first iPad. More »
