Shoe-toting protest urges German president to quit (AP)

BERLIN ? Protesters have gathered outside the German president's palace to call for President Christian Wulff to quit amid a scandal involving a loan and a furious call to a newspaper.

A few hundred demonstrators, many brandishing shoes in reference to protests in the Arab world, gathered across the road from Bellevue palace chanting "Wulff must go."

Wulff faces intense pressure over a private loan he received from a wealthy businessman's wife and a call he made to a newspaper editor before it published a story about it.

Wulff says the call was a "serious mistake" but has traded blows with the Bild newspaper over whether he actually tried to prevent the report. He says he only sought a delay.
