The Next Step In Fuquay-Varina's Squeezing Out Of Successful ...

Right Angles JLF Triangle Blog

Three weeks ago I blogged about Fuquay-Varina commissioners having voted to offer youth sports programs even though a local nonprofit has been running a successful area youth sports league for more than 20 years. Town officials say they?re not trying to take over, but that?s what?s likely to occur. The question I have is this: why would government use public money to offer a service that?s already available from a nonprofit group? One would think town officials would be appreciative that they could focus tax dollars are core services.

Hundreds of families will have to make a choice next month: stick with the Fuquay-Varina Athletic Association or sign up for the town?s new youth recreation programs.

The FVAA announced Monday it plans to keep its sports programs up and running, starting with basketball. But for the first time, the popular group will compete with the town to retain its 2,200 member families.

Fuquay-Varina is kicking off its own recreation program with basketball and volleyball. Sign-ups begin Sept. 10.
