'All My Children' star Denise Vasi joins "Single Ladies" (omg!)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - "All My Children" star Denise Vasi has joined the cast of VH1's "Single Ladies," replacing Stacey Dash, who exited after the show's first season.

Vasi will play "Raquel," a savvy businesswoman who is a friend of Keisha (LisaRaye McCoy). Charity Shea also stars on the show.

"Denise is the perfect addition to the 'Single Ladies' cast," said Flavor Unit Entertainment Executive Producer Queen Latifah. "She is bringing a fun, new element to the show."

The show was greenlit for a second season after averaging 2.8 million total viewers for premieres plus first encores in its first season. Filming for the second season will begin in January in Atlanta, and the season will air in early summer 2012.

"All My Children" aired its last episode in September. Plans to continue the show online were called off last month.

Physical fitness trumps body weight in reducing death risks, study finds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2011) ? If you maintain or improve your fitness level -- even if your body weight has not changed or increased -- you can reduce your risk of death, according to research reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.

In a study of 14,345 adult men, mostly white and middle or upper class, researchers found that:

Maintaining or improving fitness was associated with a lower death risk even after controlling for Body Mass Index (BMI) change.
Every unit of increased fitness (measured as MET, metabolic equivalent of task) over six years was associated with a 19 percent lower risk of heart disease and stroke-related deaths and a 15 percent lower risk of death from any cause.
Becoming less fit was linked to higher death risk, regardless of BMI changes.
BMI change was not associated with death risks.

BMI is a measurement based on weight and height (kg/m²). MET measures the intensity of aerobic exercise -- specifically, the ratio of metabolic rate during a specific physical activity to a reference rate of metabolic rate at rest.

"This is good news for people who are physically active but can't seem to lose weight," said Duck-chul Lee, Ph.D., the study's lead researcher and physical activity epidemiologist in the Department of Exercise Science at the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health in Columbia. "You can worry less about your weight as long as you continue to maintain or increase your fitness levels."

Results of the study underscore the importance of physical inactivity as a risk factor for death from heart disease and stroke, said researchers. Researchers also found no association between changes in body fat percentage or body weight and death risk.

Participants, who were an average 44 years old, were part of the long-term, large-scale Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study. They underwent at least two comprehensive medical exams.

Researchers used maximal treadmill tests to estimate physical fitness (maximal METs), and height and weight measurements to calculate BMI. They recorded changes in BMI and physical fitness over six years.

After more than 11 years of follow-up, researchers determined the relative risks of dying among men who lost, maintained or gained fitness over six years. They accounted for other factors that can affect outcomes, including BMI change, age, family history of heart disease, beginning fitness level, changes in lifestyle factors such as smoking and physical activity, and medical conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

One possible explanation for these results: about 90 percent of the men were either normal weight or overweight at the beginning of the study. Among obese people, changes in BMI might have a significant effect on death risks. So it's unclear whether these results would apply to severely obese people, Lee said.

A BMI score under 25 is considered healthy, 25 to less than 30 is overweight, and 30 or greater is obese.

Because the study was mostly done in white middle and upper class men, it's difficult to know whether the results apply to other racial and socioeconomic groups. Women would likely have similar results as the men in the study, Lee said.

FOR THE RECORD: I Just Bet Keith Rabois $1 ... - Business Insider

Sheryl Sandberg, one of the first folks I will add to Yahoo's new board.

Square COO and Valley tech star Keith Rabois was just bellyaching on Twitter about how Yahoo's a goner.

"Put a fork in it," Keith said.

So I pushed back on that.

Yahoo can be fixed, I said. All Yahoo needs is the right leader.

To which Keith said:

There are only 7 people who can fix Yahoo--and they're busy.

I asked Keith to list the 7.

Keith came up with 5-6:

Reid Hoffman, Mark Zuckerberg, David Sachs, Adam D'Angelo, and a couple of other folks.

I noticed I wasn't on Keith's list.

So I bet him $1 that I could fix Yahoo.

And he accepted!

So, now Keith and I have a friendly little bet on the side. If I fix Yahoo, he forks over $1. If I don't fix Yahoo, I fork over $1--via Square.

For what it's worth, I am highly confident that Yahoo can be fixed. And despite the enormous respect I have for Reid and Mark, et al, I actually don't think they're the right folks to do it, in part because I don't think they care about what Yahoo is now or could become.

I also don't think that Yahoo's product needs to be "radically transformed." I think the product needs to evolve, rapidly, to take advantage of the enormous and profound innovations that have been introduced since the late 1990s.

What Yahoo needs, in my opinion, is to be focused, reinvigorated, and radically streamlined. And the fact that absolutely no one in the techo-chamber thinks that it's even remotely possible that the company could become great again is part of the fun.

Aren't tech folks like Keith supposed to think that "impossible is nothing?"

Yes, they are!

And fixing Yahoo is far from impossible.

So, get your $1 ready, Keith.

Meanwhile, I'll get started on persuading Yahoo to give me the job.

McCready talks to police; must return son Thursday (AP)

TAMPA, Fla. ? Country singer Mindy McCready, who had been reported missing, spoke with Florida authorities Wednesday and is aware of a court order to return her 5-year-old son by Thursday afternoon, police said.

Cape Coral Police Lt. Tony Sizemore said McCready and her son are not in the Lee County, Fla., area, and that she is "currently outside of the terms of her family court stipulation." She knows that she is supposed to bring her son back to Lee County by 5 p.m. Thursday, he said.

"The million dollar question is whether she will comply," said Sizemore.

The state Department of Children and Families said a missing persons report was filed with Cape Coral police Tuesday night after McCready took her son Zander from her father's home.

McCready doesn't have custody of her son ? her mother does ? and the singer was allowed to visit the boy at her father's home, according to a department spokesman. On Tuesday, DCF discovered that McCready and the boy were not at her father's home.

DCF spokesman Terry Field told The Associated Press the agency asked a Lee County judge for an emergency pickup order, and the judge ruled McCready must return the boy voluntarily by 5 p.m. Thursday or risk an arrest warrant.

Meanwhile, McCready said on Facebook that she is not missing.

"I have been fighting the Florida court system to protect my son, and bring him home," she posted, adding that she spoke with Cape Coral Police via Skype ? something that the agency confirmed.

The singer's brother, Josh McCready, told The Associated Press in a private Facebook message that his sister was "fine."

"Mindy is fine and so is Zander. There is nothing to worry about," he wrote.

Kat Atwood, McCready's publicist, issued a statement Wednesday saying McCready and her son are "safe, healthy and comfortable," and denies that she has done anything wrong. The statement says that McCready has been awaiting a court order on whether she would be awarded custody of her son.

"No Amber Alert has been issued; this is not a missing child case," Atwood said in the statement.

The DCF spokesman said he was uncertain who actually filed the missing person's report, but said the report typically would be called in by the case management agency that oversees the case. He said Children's Network of Southwest Florida is the Community-Based Care agency for the area.

Since topping the country charts in the mid-1990s with her music, the troubled 36-year-old singer's life has been filled with domestic abuse, drug and DUI arrests and a suicide attempt. In August, she filed a libel suit in Palm Beach County against her own mother and the National Enquirer's parent company, American Media Inc., over a story published in the tabloid newspaper that quoted her mother.

In 2010, she spoke with The Associated Press about her life.

"It is a giant whirlwind of chaos all the time," she said. "I call my life a beautiful mess and organized chaos. It's just always been like that. My entire life, things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself. I think that's really the life of a celebrity, of a big, huge, giant personality."

In July 2007, she was accused of scuffling with her mother and resisting arrest at her mother's home in Florida. She was sentenced to jail for 60 days for a probation violation and released; she served 30 days in jail. She also lost custody of her son.

And in 2008, McCready was admitted to a Nashville hospital after police said she cut her wrists and took several pills in a suicide attempt.

During the TV show "Celebrity Rehab 3" in 2010 McCready came off as a sympathetic figure, and host Dr. Drew Pinsky called her an angel in the season finale.

On the show she said she suffered from love addiction, not substance abuse. In one of the show's scarier moments, McCready suffered a seizure and was rushed to a hospital where scans showed brain damage.

Also in 2010, police went to McCready's mother's home for a report of an overdose, and McCready was taken to a Florida hospital. However, neither the hospital nor McCready's publicist would say why McCready was hospitalized.

Cape Coral is on Florida's Gulf coast, about 120 miles northwest of Miami.

McCready also fought the release of a tape in which she reportedly talked about former Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens, with whom she had an affair as a teenager.

A call to a lawyer representing McCready in the custody case was not immediately returned.
